In an unusual move, the president of the South Korean giant Samsung’s mobile devices division, DJ Koh, gave an interview to the Associated Press commenting on the company’s future plans – which involve a collapsible smartphone. The release of a foldable screen Galaxy Note for 2019 is not yet confirmed. “As head of the division, I can say that our current goal is next year,” says Koh. However, as the Associated Press reports, “there are a number of obstacles that need to be overcome, leaving room to cancel the launch if the issues are not resolved,” without detailing what those “hurdles” might be. Fact is that the company has been demonstrating a technology of folding screens for more than five years. Now South Korean giant Samsung YOUM displays consist of OLED panels with the plastic substrate, which allows them to be folded without any damage. One of the first examples of what could be done with a folding screen was a smartphone with the curved display on both sides, something that is now a reality (but using another technology).
Other companies have been presenting prototypes of folding screens, notably Lenovo. The Folio has a 5.5-inch display in smartphone mode and can be unfolded to turn into a 7.8-inch tablet. For a smartphone that focuses on productivity and can be used with a pen, such as the Galaxy Note, this idea makes a lot of sense.
